Battle of IQ vs EQ

Updated: Nov 3, 2019

Long ago i saw a quote about the importance of EQ (Emotional Quotient). Back then i didnt realize how important it was. Trying daily to maintain the life and having countless failures and some successes have compelled me to rethink on the importance of EQ.

In a society like Pakistan, any child with a little higher IQ (Intelligence Quotient) is glorified (In URDU LAIK = worthy), whereas a child with a little less IQ is discouraged and rediculed to be a dummy (In URDU, NALAIK = Not worthy).

This LAIK vs NALAIK notion is as common in Pakistan as BIRYANI. What parents, teachers and society as a whole is completely failing at is to realize that a thing like EQ exists and it far more important than IQ. A higher IQ merely represents higher cognitive processing and nothing more. Higher IQ doesnt necessarily means that person will be successful or honest or even a good person.

Whereas, EQ represents the emotional interpretations and consequences of each and everything of daily life. It is true that the things that actually matter in every person’s life are the one he emotionally attach too.

I believe, parents should pay more attention to developing their children’s EQ rather than judging them on basis of their ability to memorize things and cognitive processing (IQ).
